The enjoyable pastime of observing the fall colors is called “momiji-gari”, which literally means “in search of autumn leaves”, considered by the Japanese to be as important a seasonal event as hanami in spring.

The practice of observing autumn flowers is believed to have begun as an elegant pastime enjoyed by court and aristocracy in the seventh century.

This changed, however, around the seventeenth century during the Edo period, when custom spread among ordinary people who began holding sake-festivities while enjoying the beautiful landscapes with autumn leaves.
