Avalanche hits ski field in Gunma Prefecture

It's possible that the avalanche had occurred as a result of a volcanic eruption.

Firefighters received an emergency call reporting that four people were caught in an avalanche at Kusatsu Kokusai Ski Resort here on the morning of Jan. 23.

Reports also said that an eruption had occurred at the nearby Mount Kusatsu-Shirane volcano, and it’s possible that the avalanche had occurred as a result of the eruption.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that it has registered a volcanic tremor at 9:59 a.m., and that the volcano appeared to have erupted.

There were also reports that a stone from the eruption had smashed the window of a cable car, injuring at least one person.
