The White House said that in their phone call on Saturday they talked about the concerns of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including the situation in North Korea.

These were their first talks since the US president took office.

The White House did not give any further details. But the Philippine president said earlier that he would call for a calm response from the US side, describing the United States and North Korea as playing with their toys.

Duterte said he would advise Trump not to play into the hands of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Relations between the US and the Philippines became strained after Duterte made disparaging remarks about the former president. Barack Obama had criticized Duterte’s crackdowns on drug dealers.

But the White House said Trump and Duterte had a friendly conversation. It said the US president had invited his Philippine counterpart to the White House to discuss the importance of the US-Philippine alliance.

The White House also said Trump told Duterte that he is looking forward to visiting the Philippines in November to participate in the East Asia Summit and the US-ASEAN summit.
