Tokyo to seek 12.6 billion yen to shorten nursery waiting list

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said Friday she will request a 12.6-billion-yen supplementary budget for fiscal 2016 to take additional measures to shorten the Japanese capital’s long waiting list of applicants for nursery facilities. Announcing emergency measures to address the problem, Koike said she will increase the capacities of nursery services in Tokyo by 17,000 during the year ending in March 2017, 5,000 more than the previous target. (Image/Reproduction: ANN) The extra budget will be submitted to the next session of the Tokyo metropolitan assembly that will open on Sept. 28 this year. Nursery capacities in Tokyo are insufficient, mainly due to a rise in the number of preschool children. As of April, 8,466 children were on the waiting list, marking the first increase in two years.
