Originally used to ward off evil spirits, fireworks (hanabi) have a long history in Japan and are an integral part of the summer in the country.

Hundreds of fireworks displays are held every year in the archipelago, especially during the summer, in the months of July and August, with some attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers.

A second attraction of the Japanese fireworks is the relaxing atmosphere of festival that comes with them, people dressed in yukata and streets full of food, drinks and games.

Fireworks displays usually start at some time after sunset and last for one to two hours.

Many of the longer presentations are broken up into several smaller segments, interrupted by sponsor announcements. Usually the exhibits have a grand finale with hundreds of fires launched simultaneously.
