The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology says Mount Mayon erupted on Monday, sending a plume of smoke and debris about 5,000 meters into the air.
It says the volcano’s activities, such as spewing lava from its mouth, are continuing after a minor eruption was confirmed on January 13th.
The institute raised its alert level for the volcano to 4 on a scale of 5, citing the possibility of an explosive eruption within days.
Local authorities are advising residents within 8 kilometers of the mountain to evacuate.
Some 24,000 people are said to be taking shelter in schools and other designated facilities.
Mount Mayon is one of the country’s most active volcanos, with about 50 eruptions over the past 4 centuries.
