A severe tropical storm is making its way to central Japan after hitting the southwestern islands over the weekend. Two people are dead and another 15 are injured.

At 10 AM on Monday, Noru was near Cape Muroto in Kochi Prefecture in the Shikoku region.

The storm was heading east-northeast at a speed of 20 kilometers an hour. More than 70,000 people have been advised to evacuate parts of western Japan.

Authorities are urging residents to brace for mudslides, floods and high waves along the coast.

Over 220 flights have been cancelled and airlines say that number could increase.

The storm battered the island of Kyushu with heavy rain and violent winds on Sunday, just one month after torrential rains and landslides hit the region.

The Kyusyu Electric Power Company says about 600 households are still without electricity.
