Mitsubishi Corp. and the Philippine conglomerate Ayala group will open a Japan-themed commercial area as early as this year at a major shopping complex in the heart of the Southeast Asian country’s capital.

The project will be developed on the roof of Ayala’s Glorietta mall in the city of Makati, located in the central portion of Metro Manila. Hallohallo, a local company established by a Japanese national, will open a store serving as an anchor tenant to the Japan-themed area.

The 2,500-sq.-meter space will boast restaurants, food stalls and a Cool Japan Shop, which will sell items such as anime-related products. The site also will feature a stage area to host music events including concerts by idol groups.

Glorietta is located in an area full of shopping malls that attracts young Filipinos and families, as well as numerous tourists.

Food villages featuring Japanese cuisine are popping up around the Philippines, and Ayala and Mitsubishi aim to capitalize on Japan’s growing popularity in the country.
