Gifu: Body of newborn baby girl left on grounds of shrine

The dead body of a newborn baby girl was found on a shrine’s grounds in Gifu city, police said Friday. According to the police, at around 1 p.m. on Thursday, a woman who was walking in Kumano Shrine notified police that there was a suspicious white backpack at the base of a tree on the grounds, Fuji TV reported. Police found the infant’s body inside the backpack. The umbilical cord was still attached to her body, and she was naked. Police said they are examining street surveillance camera footage in the vicinity of the shrine to try and identify the person or persons responsible for bringing the baby’s body to the shrine.
